A second space in real space. The space we scan is empty. We only recognise that there is another space within, on specially programmed hand-held screens: banderoles full of numbers, numbers of dead people, wound around virtual globes. The confusion between the real and the virtual in Peter Weibel’s latest artistic work serves not to escape the world, but to return to the real: thus, the numbers remind us of where and why people were killed for political, ethnic and religious reasons – a brutal, very real history of the 20th century, symbolically and metonymically condensed.
